Vacancy for Principal Conductor (September 2026)

The Organisation

Founded in 1973, the Mid-Somerset Orchestra is an amateur ensemble that draws its membership from a wide geographical area, including Wells, Shepton Mallet, Glastonbury, Street and the surrounding areas. The orchestra currently comprises approximately 50 musicians, predominantly adults of Grade 8 or equivalent standard, who come together to rehearse and perform a diverse range of classical music. Soloists and extra musicians are engaged as required for concert performances.

In addition to its unpaid members, the orchestra benefits from two professional positions: the Principal Conductor (this vacancy) and the Leader (principal first violinist). These professional roles are integral to the ensemble’s musical leadership and artistic development.

The orchestra is committed to providing its members with opportunities for rehearsal and live performance while delivering exceptional classical music experiences to audiences. Rehearsals take place in a modern, spacious venue in Croscombe. Performances are primarily held at Strode Theatre in Street, Somerset which has excellent facilities for both performers and audiences.

The orchestra is managed by a voluntary committee and is a registered charity. Further information about the orchestra can be found at www.midsomersetorchestra.co.uk. An archive of past repertoire can be found here.

  • Plan and conduct rehearsals and concerts (typically four concerts per season).
  • Advise the committee on appropriate repertoire , considering both standard classical works and innovative programming possibilities taking into account the capabilities of the orchestra members.
  • Work with the orchestra’s leader, section leads and the committee to develop the orchestra’s capabilities and repertoire.
  • Engage with orchestra members to inspire and maintain high artistic standards in a relaxed, constructive environment.
  • Attend occasional planning and other meetings with the orchestra’s committee.

  • A collaborative mindset, open to working with the orchestra’s leadership and contributing to programming and strategic development.
  • Commitment to the local musical community including engagement with concert audiences.

Remuneration & Time Commitment

  • This is a freelance position, paid per session for time spent working directly with the orchestra in weekly rehearsals and on concert days. The fees for season 2025-26 are £111 per two-hour rehearsal and £674 per concert including a full rehearsal in the concert venue on the day. There are no additional payments for preparation, travel or other routine expenses. It is expected that annual cost of living increases will be awarded.
  • Rehearsals take place 7.30-9.30pm on Wednesdays during school term-times (approximately 36 per year). Concerts take place afternoons or evenings on Saturdays or Sundays in November, February, May and July. A schedule of rehearsals and concerts for the current season can be found here.
  • We are seeking a candidate who is committed to working with us for an extended period, ideally not less than five years. The position includes a trial period that requires preparation and performance of at least one complete orchestra programme.
