Land, Legends & the Planets

Saturday 22nd November 2025, 3.00pm
Strode Theatre, Street, Somerset

Bring the whole family for an afternoon of popular orchestral masterworks. Wagner’s Overture to Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg showcases the composer’s grand operatic style. Next, we travel to Bohemia for Smetana’s Vltava, which paints a musical picture of the eponymous river as it flows through the Czech countryside. The concert concludes with one of the great orchestral spectacles of the 20th century: Gustav Holst’s The Planets. From the bracing power of “Mars, the Bringer of War” to the ethereal mystery of “Neptune, the Mystic,” this enduring favourite blends cosmic imagination with bold orchestration.

Conducted by Hitoshi Suzuki, this concert promises a thrilling blend of drama, lyricism and orchestral colour. A must for classical music lovers and newcomers alike.

Join the Mid-Somerset Orchestra in the cosy surroundings of Strode Theatre for a delightful afternoon concert of Italian and Viennese music.

The concert opens with Rossini’s overture to La Cenerentola (Cinderella), a lively and witty piece full of rhythmic sparkle and operatic charm. Rising star Melvin Wai, a talented young pianist from Wells Cathedral School, then performs Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1. Written in the 1790s, this concerto blends youthful energy with classical grace, featuring expressive melodies, dynamic contrasts, and virtuosic passages that highlight both the soloist’s skill and the orchestra’s interplay.

The concert concludes with Mozart’s Symphony No. 41 “Jupiter”, his final symphony known for its grandeur and complexity. Its final movement is especially notable for combining five distinct themes in an intricate, masterful fugue. The orchestra will be conducted by Hitoshi Suzuki.
